Herreshoff 45

'Tashtego' is an iconic West Australian yacht with a rich history forged by the many WA sailors that have been fortunate enough to grace her decks.

She is a custom design from the drawing board of Americas cup designer Halsey Herreshoff. With her striking sheer line, she exudes a timeless elegance that modern designs simply can't match. Tashtego turns heads wherever she sails!

With her exceptional pedigree comes impressive sailing performance, a realm in which Tashtego truly excels.

Tashtego was crafted in Western Australia by Jim Carroll in 1981, with no expense spared. Her hull features a full epoxy layup, ensuring both durability and performance.
In 2010, Tashtego underwent an extensive, no-expense-spared refit, with an estimated $600,000 invested. The owner at the time had ambitious cruising plans, aiming to prepare the yacht for serious ocean passages in high latitudes. The refit included a complete strip-down and respray, the installation of new deck hardware, new spars and rigging, an extended coach house roof for increased headroom below, new redesigned balanced rudder, a full rewire, a high-output watermaker, NKE autopilot, radar, AIS transponder, and much more.

The original design featured a cat rig with two freestanding masts. During the 2010 refit, America's Cup rigging engineer Phil Kaiko was commissioned to design an entirely new cutter rig. The design brief called for a rig that could be easily managed by a small crew or single-handed. Today, Tashtego boasts a carbon fibre mast, boom, spinnaker pole, and bowsprit. The rig and sails alone represented a significant portion of the refit budget.

The cockpit design is clean and uncluttered, featuring comfortable deep coamings. The hard dodger is thoughtfully designed, seamlessly blending with the original design, and is a highly sought-after feature for any offshore sailor. An electric halyard winch makes raising the mainsail effortless, while the primary winches are ideally placed within easy reach of the helmsman. The folding Lewmar wheel adds a nice touch, and the extra-wide side decks ensure a safe and comfortable passage to the bow. In every way, this is a true sailor's yacht.
Below deck, the layout is clean, straightforward, and highly functional. The saloon boasts a spacious L-shaped settee and showcases stunning laminated roof beams. On the port side, you'll find a full-sized chart table, adding to the practical design.

The galley is located just to port of the companionway and is well-equipped for long voyages. It features a deep stainless steel sink, ample storage, and a large, top-loading refrigeration unit. A high-quality four-burner Broadwater stove with an oven and grill completes the setup.

The master accommodation is located forward and offers a comfortable double pullman berth. Storage is very well catered for with plenty of drawers and cupboards. Just forward of the cabin, there's a private en-suite that also includes a large sail storage locker, with easy access to pass sails up to the deck through the large overhead hatch. The guests cabin is in the aft starboard quarter and features a double bed and its own private head.

Tashtego is powered by a well maintained 40hp Nanni diesel. Engine access is exceptional both forward and aft. The engine is positioned amidships providing very good weight distribution.

Tashtego has been very well maintained and cherished by her current owner, who unfortunately no longer has the time to sail and enjoy her. This yacht would be perfect for a cruising couple seeking a highly capable bluewater cruiser with impressive performance to match. She has already completed one full circumnavigation of Australia.
