'Guenevere" is a classic gaff rigged Herreshoff schooner that embodies the legacy of one of the most respected names in yachting history. Needless to say, she turns heads wherever she sails.
Guenevere was built at Maylands by Michael Paley in 1974. She was built from rugged steel and engineered to be extremely strong as the original owner had ambitions to sails her to the Antarctic.
Under sail Guenevere has a very sea-kindly motion and a nicely balanced helm. Her gaff rig is very efficient and can be easily managed by a crew of two. The masts are fibreglass which greatly reduces maintenance, and compared to traditional wooden spars, improves performance by reducing weight aloft.
The original design incorporated tiller steering, a popular choice for designers of this era. The current owner converted her over to wheel steering which has made her easier and more comfortable to helm.
The side decks are relatively uncluttered and the addition of solid stainless steel lifelines has greatly improved safety while going forward for sail changes and handling.
The cockpit is compact and offers great protection from the solid dodger.
Stepping down below is like steeping back in time. A stunning traditional butterfly hatch floods the saloon with natural light from above. Queensland Beach and Jarrah have been used for the interior fit out. The cabinets are hand crafted in solid timber and built to last a lifetime. From the opening portholes to the galley sink hand pump, everywhere you look there are solid bronze fittings and hardware from a bygone maritime era.
The master cabin is forward and features a comfortable size double bed. The whitewashed walls combined with the natural light from the overhead hatch give the cabin a light bright airy feel. There is additional accommodation in the saloon and a single aft quarter berth.
The current owner has spared no expense maintaining Guenevere with over $50,000 spent over the past couple of years. This included a strip back and refinish of the hull below the waterline. The current has owned Guenevere for twenty years and has sailed her between Perth and Mandurah on a regular basis. The antifoul was just redone in March 2025 and she is ready for adventures on the high seas with a new owner.
