Description: Precision 36 - Twin diesel, two cabins, sleeps 6
Arc-en-ciel (French for 'Over of the rainbow') is a very well presented family cruiser. One of three Randell designed 36' Precision Marine vessels originally purpose built to Limited survey (10 ton displacement) by Department of Transport as Marshall vessels (PV26) for the control of spectator craft for the 1987 Americas Cup challenge off Fremantle.
She has been owned by the same family since her acquisition in 1989 (35 years ago) following the Americas Cup defence and has subsequently provided them with three decades of on-water enjoyment.
Underway she has a maximum speed of 15 knots and cruises very economically on the plane at 12 knots. Being built to survey she is a solid boat and has stood the test of time well. Her engine room is very clean and tidy housing the twin 200HP Volvo Penta diesel shaft drives. A keel provides some protection for the running gear, adds stability and reducing mooring swing.
Her rear deck features a well insulated icebox, low maintenance fibreglass non slip flooring, hot water deck shower and a factory fitted transom door. A shade awning covers 3/4 of the deck.
A ladder links the cockpit to the flybridge helm station where there is seating for a handful of guests to keep the skipper company. Nav gear is pretty basic but let's face it, Rottnest and Garden Island are line of sight anyway. A soft top bimini and clears provide protection from the elements.
The saloon is where this pocket rocket really shines. Large opening windows allow plenty of light and breeze inside. Her furniture layout is traditional however very functional and spacious with seating for a crowd plus a mezzanine galley allowing everyone, even the chef can be part of the conversation. A lower helm station is fitted but seldom used. A cabinet to starboard cleverly hides the bar out of sight until the party begins.
There are many features of Arc-en-ciel which were ahead of their time. I've already mentioned the transom door and galley setup, in addition up in the bow where the master stateroom is located features an island style double berth - something that wasn't really adopted by other designers until years later. Again, an ergonomically well designed craft - Thanks Len!
She is constructed with hand laid fibreglass/GRP. Underside of hull was completely stripped back in 2019 and re-primed and anti-fouled. No evidence of osmosis at all throughout her life.
There is a file full of service history to wade through. Recent upgrades include:
2024 New carpet
2023 November - Antifouled with Propspeed
2023 November - Engines and accessories fully serviced and checked and components replaced as required
2023 Engine exhaust elbows replaced with genuine Volvo Penta parts
2022 October - Cooling system and turbos replaced with new
2021 New bimini and clears
2019 New Bennett Trim Tabs fitted
For a retired couple looking for an easy to handle boat or a young family looking for their first, this Precision 36 is pretty good value for money if you're chasing a diesel shaft drive vessel with a good pedigree.
