Alexander Marine are pleased to present the 2017 Schionning Custom 66 'Kato' to the market as worldwide central agents.
Embark on the adventure of a lifetime aboard 'Kato', a remarkable fusion of performance, comfort, and eco-friendly innovation. Experience this extraordinary vessel, arguably the fastest cruising catamaran globally, and elevate your sailing journey.
The owner's uncompromising vision for the latest Schionning Custom 66 model was clear: "Light, durable, fast, offshore, self-sufficient, hybrid". The result is a groundbreaking performance catamaran, powered by sustainable technology. A custom hybrid propulsion system quietly drives two electric motors and powers all onboard systems. While sailing, the batteries are recharged through regeneration, and the Fisher Panda DC to DC Generator can assist in charging the Lithium battery pack as needed, reducing the environmental footprint. The Victron inverter ensures all AC power needs are met onboard.
The sail plan and rig of 'Kato' are the result of a collaboration between North Sails and Southern Spars. The carbon fibre 23-meter mast was built in South Africa, while the 3Di sails, made from lightweight pre-preg material used in America's Cup racing yachts, were crafted by North Sails. Using their in-house design software, Southern Spars and North Sails engineered the ideal aerofoil package for a modern catamaran. Notably, 'Kato' features a custom-designed in-boom furling system, making her one of the first performance cruisers to incorporate this feature. The square-top mainsail furl into the boom.
The cockpit is easily accessed through wide stern sugar scoops and offers a large, comfortable molded U-shaped lounge set around dual carbon fibre tables, perfect for entertaining. Adjacent to port is a spacious daybed-style lounge. The hardtop overhang provides excellent protection from the sun, while fixed side spray dodgers and mesh breezeways at the rear add extra privacy and shelter. A spacious sail and paddleboard bin aft of the lounge ensures plenty of room for water toys. The starboard helm station pod is equipped with Raymarine electronics, including a 17" MFD with GPS plotter, sounder, autopilot, windspeed/direction, and tri-data, ideal for extended voyages.
Seamlessly connecting the cockpit to the saloon are aluminum-framed entry doors. Inside, the saloon is designed for functionality and comfort, with a spacious galley to port that serves both the saloon and cockpit. The open-plan galley features double bowl sinks, generous pantry space, Isotherm refrigeration, a Smeg three-burner gas cooktop, and a Smeg oven/grill. The starboard side seating area offers a large U-shaped lounge/daybed around a carbon fibre table. The entertainment console across from the seating includes a Samsung 42" TV and soundbar, with the switchboard conveniently located beneath the bench.
Guest accommodations include two cabins. The master cabin to starboard features a raised king-sized bed, ample storage, a private ensuite with a separate shower stall forward of midships, a spacious walk-in wardrobe, and an additional storage bunk that can also serve as a berth. On the port side, the VIP guest cabin offers a raised king bed, an extra pipe berth if needed, and a separate ensuite that also functions as the day head. Air conditioning ensures comfort throughout the vessel.
The utility rooms in each hull house the twin Ocean Volt SD15 Saildrive electric motors and a Fisher Panda generator, providing a sprint speed of up to 10 knots when required. With a 200-litre fuel capacity, 'Kato' offers an impressive cruising range thanks to its efficient and low-maintenance drivetrain.
