"Light, sturdy, fast, offshore, self-sufficient, hybrid" was the brief for the uncompromising owner of the latest model Schionning G-Force 2000 Special. What resulted is a performance catamaran that is truly pioneering with eco-friendly technology. Featuring a custom hybrid propulsion system, it quietly powers two electric drives and all onboard appliances and electronics. During sailing, the batteries are continuously recharged through regeneration. A Fisher Panda DC to DC Generator can also assist in charging the Lithium battery pack if necessary, thus minimizing environmental impact. The Victron inverter takes care of all your onboard AC power requirements.
'Kato's' sail plan and rig were created through a collaboration between North Sails and Southern Spars. The carbon fibre 23m mast was constructed in South Africa, while the one-piece molded 3Di sails from North Sails were made from a lightweight pre-preg material used in America's Cup racing yachts.
Southern Spars and North Sails used their in-house design software to develop the best aerofoil package for a modern catamaran. Her custom-designed "in-boom" furling system onboard makes 'Kato' one of the first performance-oriented cruisers to feature such a system. The square top mainsail will furl into the boom.
Accessing the spacious cockpit is effortless via the generous stern sugar scoops. The cockpit features a large, comfortable, molded U-shaped upholstered lounge set around generous dual carbon fibre tables, ideal for entertaining guests and a large daybed-styled lounge adjacent to port. The hardtop overhang offers excellent coverage suitable for Australia's climate, while the cockpit features fixed side spray dodger clears and a mesh breezeway aft for extra protection & privacy. Additionally, a spacious sail and paddleboard bin is located aft of the cockpit lounge to store your water toys. The helm station pod, located to starboard, is equipped with a full array of Raymarine electronics, including a 17" MFD incorporating GPS plotter, sounder, autopilot/autotac, windspeed/direction and tri-data, making it perfect for long voyages.
Access from the cockpit to the saloon is through aluminium-framed entry doors that seamlessly connect the two spaces. The clever layout of the saloon includes a spacious galley to port, conveniently serving both the saloon and cockpit. The open-plan galley features a double bowl sinks and is well-appointed with ample pantry space, Isotherm refrigeration, a Smeg three burner gas cooktop, and a Smeg oven/grill. The saloon seating layout features a spacious U-shaped lounge/daybed to starboard, arranged around a carbon fibre table. Opposite the saloon seating, the entertainment console includes a Samsung 42" TV and soundbar, with 'Kato's' switchboard conveniently located beneath the bench.
She provides Guest accommodations is a two cabin configuration. The master cabin to starboard includes a raised king sized bed, ample storage, a private ensuite with a separate shower stall located forward of midships, a spacious walk-in wardrobe and an additional storage bunk that can serve as a berth. Air conditioning ensures comfort onboard.
The spacious utility rooms in each hull house the twin Ocean Volt SD15 Saildrive electric motors and a single Fisha Panda generator, offering a sprint speed of up to 10 knots when needed. A fuel capacity of 200 litres offers ample cruising range with her frugal and low maintenance drivetrain.
