Having navigated the globe and Antarctica, "Sheenan Star" is an impressive example of the highly regarded Gilbert Caroff-designed Super Disko 47ft Steel Expedition Yacht, purposely designed for world and polar expeditions, where the Super Disko was the extended version of a popular model designed by Caroff called Ile Disko. Her 11mm thick steel hull brings great security and versatility to her build, further benefiting from a retractable keel to meet the risks of sailing in ice-bound areas, also enabling it to sail onto a beach. Sheenan Star is littered with smart design and features to provide a voluminous and comfortable long-distance cruiser.
Sheenan Star's decks are simple and easy to navigate with smart additions for rugged exploration. The vessel features an extended bow sprit and walkway for easy boarding when nose-in to shore or ice, closely accompanied by a large windlass system and ground tackle. The foredeck is cleverly designed to house a tender, surrounded by a series of on-deck storage lockers and deck hatches. The aluminium mast and anodised aluminium boom are accompanied by a pair of granny bars to aid in safe movement around the deck, with a non-slip deck and high side rails, she provides an easily navigable space. With a new mainsail, furling headsail and boom bag added in 2013, plus storm sails, Sheenan Star has a good inventory ready for further exploration.
The cockpit is deep and well sheltered thanks to the hard bimini top and thick acrylic windows with all cockpit winches and helm easily within reach. Powered by a Vetus P4.25 61hp, Sheenan Star sees a cruising speed of 5 knots under power and a maximum of 7 knots, burning 2.5 L/hr with its 400L of fuel.
Towards the stern, the aft deck area is home to large windows and deck hatches, allowing a great deal of natural light to filter into the aft cabin below. Accompanied by large stainless-steel davits, two solar panels, a stern anchor mounted on the sugar scoop and manual windlass on the main deck. Navigation through this area is made simple thanks to overbuilt stanchions and rails and a wide access ladder to the sugar scoop. Upon stepping into the saloon, it's easy to see why these vessels offer such a great liveaboard and explorer package. The saloon is soaked in natural light thanks to a series of large deck windows surrounding the pilothouse. To port sits a large, raised U-shape settee with eye-level outdoor views, and an expansive dining table with in-built storage facing the galley. Sitting to starboard and opposite the settee is a well-equipped gimballed galley with a SMEG gas stove, oven, microwave, large Waeco refrigerator, chest freezer and twin sinks, providing comfortable long-duration living and smart ergonomics. Immediately forward of the galley is a pilothouse helm and navigation station fitted with a Furuno radar, Garmin plotter system, VHF, Vetus autopilot, helm wheel and Vetus throttle controls.
Aft of the galley and to each side of the main deck access, sit a pair of corridors housing enormous storage and hanging lockers, and a row of navigation controls and metering equipment, but ultimately leading to an enormous and bright king-size aft cabin which is lined with cabinetry for additional storage space.
Forward and past the saloon you will find a set of sizable bunks sitting to starboard, while in the forepeak is a spacious double bed and large bathroom, all with an astonishing amount of storage and natural light, providing comfortable accommodation for at least 6.
Sheenan Star benefits from clever design and a smart layout, featuring a beautifully airy and spacious saloon, galley and internal pilothouse helm. The steel explorer expedition yacht has been proven on numerous occasions as a well-equipped and designed true blue-water cruiser designed for polar cruising.
