Marie of Myall is a very special 35" timber criuising yacht built by master boatbuilder Jeff Clist and his wife Marie.
Jeff and Marie Clist started building Marie of Myall in about 1981 in their backyard at Pittwater, North Sydney as a part time project. After a lifetime of building boats from dingies to ocean racers, MoM was their dream boat for their retiring years. To their own design, the lines were transposed full size onto their loungroom floor of their shack on the Myall River, this way they were able to get a very fair hull shape.
While still operating their boat building business by day the yacht took 10 years to build in their spare time. MoM was launched in December of 1991 and took another 5 years before completion with deck gear, mast and sails.
Jeff Clist was a renowned shipwright and the double-ender design was settled on simply because he hadnt built one previously. Having built numerous boats including the 1963 Lorita Maria (a famous ocean racer of the time reputed to be the strongest timber ocean racer ever built in Australia) Jeff also painstakingliy made the moulds for the bronze deck fittings and knees before having a local foundry cast them. In true nautical tradition the mast is stepped on a coin for good luck. In this case its a New Zealand Half Crown that was in Marie's shoe the day she married Jeff nearly 60 years prior.
MoM visited the Launceston Wooden Boat Rally in 2008, she sailed to Hobart for the Wooden Boat School in 2009 on the Huon river with 500 other boats for the Wooden Boat Rally as well as attending many of the old gaffer days in Sydney with other wooden boat officianados. MoM has had a glorious life with the current family collecting her in Tasmania after a Garmin electronics upgrade including AIS, Auto Pilot, and Bluetooth synching, the owner hoisted the sails and over 39 days made the journey from Tasmania to WA. What an adventure considering it was a single-handed crossing, and what a testament to Marie of Myalls seaworthiness!
MoM is conventionally planked in 1" thick white beech ( with Dynel cloth ) splined on hardwood ribs at 6 inch centres. All floors beams are 3 inch wide at 18 inch centres. All fasteners are bronze, copper and stainless steel. Decks are White beech with a mostly Teak wheel house. Internal fitout is in white beech, teak, huon pine, tea tree, and mahogany. Rigging is in stainless steel with the mast and boom in clear select Oregon. Where are you going to locate a boat built to this level of finish in these timbers in today's world? The joinery on display is quite beyond compare.
Accomodation is well laid out with twin single beds in the front cabin (with infill board if needed). Further beds in the saloon.
The current owner has her set up in motor sailing mode, with the headsail and engine operating in unison for around a 5-6 knot cruise speed. She previously ran a gaff rig with spinnaker, and there are sails to accomodate this, should the new owner wish to head in that direction. In our shallow estuary waters, her draft of only 1.2 metres is handy.
Powered by a 3 cylnder Lister Petter 30 Hp diesel engine with shaft drive to a fixed prop, a comfortable 5.7 knots in good water is standard. Watching her motor past you would swear she is tracking a lot quicker such is her appeal on the water.
Electronics, electrics, hydraulic steering are all modern, reflective of an experienced interested owner. Victron charger, Garmin electronics with AIS, Tri-ducer, and auto pilot, and new batteries all fitted in 2023.
Drivfing station in Pilothouse has all instruments and steering wheel (large). Cockpit steering wheel has been switched to Pilothouse. Small timber wheel is stored on the boat but not fitted to give more room in the cockpit. Easily refitted.
