From the drawing board of the renowned Bakewell-White design firm, the Z39 was the winning entry for a Yachting New Zealand competition to create a modern one-design racer/cruiser. Boasting impressive performance, these vessel's have proven to be highly competitive both inshore and offshore, whilst being easily managed shorthanded thanks to their high ballast ratio. Superbly built by Hakes Marine, 'Jazz Player' was the first Z39 launched and is an exceptional example of the design. The vessel was raced out of Wellington NZ for its first two years, before being sold to a highly experienced sailor in Melbourne. He went on to enjoy great success in the vessel competing in 5 Sydney to Hobart Races, the Melbourne to Vanuatu race, multiple Hamilton Island Race weeks, and won both line honours and IRC in the 2009 Melbourne to Hobart race. Following this success, the owner set his sights on the 2018 Melbourne to Osaka Race and undertook a comprehensive refit of the vessel in preparation for a serious double handed campaign. The vessel was stripped back to bare bones with all systems rebuilt from scratch. This extensive work included a NEW 2016 lighter and deeper fin keel, replaced the single wheel with an independent twin wheel steering system, modified the sailing plan with the addition of a square top main and hanked on headsails, full new B&G H5000 System installed, Lithium LifePo4 battery set up, a new fixed bowsprit added, and the cruising interior replaced with a well thought out racing fitout. The vessel was then sold in 2019 where it moved to Hobart and has been an active and highly competitive member of the racing scene, boasting a long list of podium wins in ORC, IRC, PHS, and Line Honours. Owned and fastidiously maintained by a marine industry professional, the vessel presents in exceptional condition with many recent upgrades including NEW 2023 STAINLESS STEEL ROD RIGGING (NITRONIC-5), NEW 2023 TWIN PBO/DYNEEMA 75-99 BACK STAYS, NEW 2024 B&G ZEUS 7" CHART PLOTTER, NEW 2024 JP3 LOWER RUDDER BEARING, NEW 2023 DOYLE STRATIS OFFSHORE MAINSAIL, NEW 2023 DOYLE STRATIS J1, the list goes on! Complete with a comprehensive sail inventory, and freshly antifouled AUG 2024, this impressive vessel is ready to race! Whether you want to take on the challenge of the 2025 Melbourne to Osaka Race, a Double Handed or fully crewed Sydney to Hobart, or enjoy fast and fun inshore racing, this vessel simply ticks all the boxes!
Outside, the spacious cockpit is superbly set up for serious racing. The twin wheels each feature B&G Zeus 7" Chart plotters to keep the helm on track, with the 4 Garmin Mast Jumbos and two bulk head mounted B&G H5000 displays also in clear sight. Easily sailed shorthanded, the Harken self tailing winches fore and aft of the wheels allow the helm to also trim the main and runners when required, whilst also being well positioned for the full race crew. All lines are lead back to the cabin top with quality constrictor clutches providing both security and fast handling. The clean white decks have an excellent non-slip finish, and provide easy access around the vessel in all conditions. With NEW Rod Rigging, the Southern Spars Carbon mast is highly adjustable with the mast jack, further adding to the vessel's high level performance.
Inside, the well thought out racing interior is clean, tidy, and well organised. There are 8 pipe cots, with ample storage underneath. The functional galley is to port and features a 2 burner gimbled gas stove and stainless steel sink with fresh water. The bow is left bare for sail storage, with a manual Jabsco toilet installed behind the bulkhead for privacy. A great feature of this vessel is the aft Nav station. Complete with chart plotter, radios, Iridum Go sat phone, and bean bag for comfort, this is sure to impress even the fussiest navigator!
This vessel is powered by a well maintained and reliable 40HP Yanmar Diesel engine with upgraded 120amp alternator for fast battery charging of the LifePo4 Lithium Batteries. Easily accessed for hassle free servicing it provides a comfort 7 knots of cruising speed.
With its gleaming top sides, and stunning modern aesthetics turning heads on the race course and in the marina, this really is a vessel not to miss! The start of the next sailing season is sight, so now is the time to make your racing dreams a reality. For more information please call Jo Breen on
