A one-off motor launch built by Robert Laughlin and launched in 2003,"Montagu" is an excellent example of thoughtful design and fine craftsmanship. Presenting in beautiful condition, this Max Creese design turns heads wherever she sits, particularly when slipping through the water at its efficient cruise speeds. Originally built to AMSA survey standards, "Montagu" never saw commercial work and was instead used as an extended cruiser, making extended passages to the likes of Tasmania's famed Port Davey and the glamorous East Coast. She quickly became a common sight at the most remote and beautiful anchorages across the state thanks to its unforgettable silhouette.
The interior presents in fantastic condition, with a bright and spacious saloon, "Montagu" can easily seat 4 or more across the large L-shape settee to the port side, accompanied by a lovely timber dinette. The starboard side features a row of storage cabinets, leading to the helm station forward. The helm is very well equipped, featuring a recently updated Raymarine multifunction display, Furuno radar, a Course Master autopilot, VHF and all the switchgear, engine controls and engine telemetry you'd expect from a vessel of its size.
Down just a couple easy steps to the port side sits the galley, making service to the saloon simple with a thoughtful bar petition, while still sharing the same airspace. The galley is well-equipped, featuring a stainless-steel sink, deep in-built fridge unit and a 2-burner stove and grill, plus all the storage you'd expect from an extended cruising package.
The guest cabin sits to the starboard side and features a twin single bunk configuration. While not fitted with a solid wall to enclose this cabin, it's design neatly tucks occupants away to provide great accommodation for two. The master cabin sits in the bow and is configured as a large double V-berth with plenty of floor space and storage to make time spent onboard comfortable and enjoyable. A large head is positioned to port, featuring a marine electric toilet, stainless steel sink, great storage and a shower.
The cockpit is arguably one of the crowning features of "Montagu", with fantastic floor space and high, protected sides. The versatile outdoor space features a salt-water deck wash, pot hauler winch, aft settee and tremendous underfloor storage. The engine sits central in the cockpit, providing excellent seating atop the fully removable cover. The engine itself is a Cummins 220hp diesel unit, providing a simply stunning and economical cruise speed of 10-12 knots and a top speed of 20 knots. The superstructure extends over approximately half of the cockpit, providing a great deal of shelter, while the sides extend past the aft bulkhead of the saloon to prevent side spray.
The side decks are easy to navigate, thanks to a series of hand-holds on the superstructure, while the stern features a handy boarding platform and stainless steel dinghy davits. A side transom door makes for easy transit in and out.
"Montagu" is a stunning example of Tasmanian craftsmanship in a timeless and beautiful motor launch package. With a history of recreational boating enthusiast ownership, this vessel is a common sight among Tasmania's cruising grounds. With its economical and capable hull design and great upkeep, "Montagu" turns heads wherever she goes.
