VESSEL DESCRIPTION
The "Arahina" is a traditional displacement wooden Pilot Boat that was originally designed to perform pilot transfers for the Wellington Harbour Board. The vessel is powered by a single marine diesel engine driving a fixed pitch propeller and features a forward Pilothouse, with an accommodation superstructure aft.

CONSTRUCTION
The vessel was built and designed by Charles Bailey Jr in Auckland to undertake pilotage duties on Wellington Harbour and was delivered in November 1925.
Arahina is constructed of three skins of Kauri timber, with two diagonals of 16mm and the third skin running fore and aft of 37mm timber. The Kauri longitudinal stringers have been doubled up with Jarrah. The decks and cabins structures are also a timber construction.
There are four traverse watertight bulkheads throughout the hull. Tankage is in the engine room.
All surfaces have been prepared and finished with the appropriate marine coatings.

LAYOUT
The Pilothouse is positioned forward of amidships above the engine room. Access into the Pilothouse is off the starboard deck. Access to the forward lower cabin is via a hatch aft of the helm station down a flight of stairs. The forward cabin has a large double island berth forward, and a small handbasin to starboard and a single berth.
A companionway leads aft from the Pilothouse with access to the port side deck, then the ablutions with shower, handbasin and toilet, then the mess and galley area aft. Access to the engine room is via a hatch to starboard and to the lower aft cabin/space is access via another in the floor to port. The next area aft is the lazerette accessed via a raised hatch where the steering arrangement is housed.

PLUMBING & SANITATION
Pressure hot and cold water is reticulated to the galley and the bathroom.
A TMC electric macerator toilet is fitted and is coupled to the blackwater holding tank.

SUMMARY
The "Arahina" was a strong well-constructed vessel originally designed and built by the renowned Charles Bailey Jr for the Wellington Harbour Board for Pilot Boat duties on Wellington Harbour from 1925 until 1987.

Arahina is now 99 years old, and on initial inspection she presents reasonably well, despite her age. However, an underwater inspection by divers recently has revealed that there is heavy fouling below the waterline with barnacles, mussels, oysters, and seaweed growth, that covers the underwater section of the hull. During the inspection the divers removed small areas of fouling, which revealed sections of rot in the keel and garboard plank. One of the report's photos, showed rot in the keel to the extent that a keel bolt was clearly exposed. As only small sections of fouling were removed during the inspection, it could not be determined to what the extent of the rot is.
